STX Group and SKW Piesteritz partner for green nitrogen production

  • The partnership involves STX Group’s provision of multi-year biomethane supply to SKW Piesteritz, ensuring predictability and sustainability in green nitrogen production
  • STX Group and SKW Piesteritz take a significant step in the journey towards sustainable agrochemical and industrial chemical solutions

AMSTERDAM/ Lutherstadt Wittenberg (December 14, 2023) — STX Group, a leading global firm in environmental markets and climate finance, and SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz GmbH (SKW Piesteritz), Germany’s largest producer of ammonia and urea, have announced their strategic partnership today. The collaboration marks a significant milestone in the journey towards decarbonized nitrogen and ammonia production.

The partnership, formalized in November 2023, sees STX Group providing SKW Piesteritz with a multi-year, long-term supply of biomethane, a crucial element in enabling predictable and sustainable nitrogen production. SKW Piesteritz, positioned at the forefront of green agrochemical and industrial chemical production in Europe, is set to leverage this collaboration to further its commitment to environmentally friendly solutions that meet the diverse needs of the German industry.

This deal not only showcases the commitment of both companies to the energy transition but also underscores the strength of their capabilities despite the current undersupply in biomethane markets. STX Group boosts its role as a market marker and liquidity provider demonstrating that long-term arrangements and production planning are not only feasible but can be executed successfully.

Sead Keric, Managing Partner for Renewable Gas at STX Group, said: “We are proud to leverage our market expertise and liquidity provision capabilities to enable a major player like SKW Piesteritz to provide reliably low-carbon products. This partnership underscores the importance of foresight and planning in navigating the evolving landscape of sustainable raw material production for Europe’s largest economy.”

Antje Bittner, Chief Sales Officer at SKW Piesteritz, emphasizes: “SKW Piesteritz is consistently pursuing the de-fossilization of its products. The demand for green fertilizer and ammonia will increase massively in the future. Thanks to the use of biomethane and the cooperation with STX Group, SKW Piesteritz will be able to meet the demand for innovative, de-fossilized, climate friendly urea-based fertilizer specialties even better than today.

The partnership between STX Group and SKW Piesteritz has been further bolstered by the support of REM CAPITAL AG, a German service provider in the field of renewable energy headquartered in Stuttgart.

As the world grapples with the challenges of sustainable industrial growth, this partnership stands as a beacon of joint innovation, paving the way for a greener future and setting a precedent for future collaborations in the biomethane market.
